Constructed in 1996, Dataran Lang
(Eagle Square) on Langkawi's Kuah Jetty is often the first thing
visitors see of the island: a 12-meter high eagle statue set next to
Lagenda Park. The eagle looks out to the Andaman Sea, facing the ferry
route into the island; visitors come here to look out onto Kuah Bay and
enjoy the nearby park's ponds, terraces, bridges, and eateries. At
night, powerful floodlights illuminate the eagle, allowing visitors to
see the magnificent eagle spreading its wings in the dark.
The eagle is meant as a visual pun on the etymology of the island's name: Helang (eagle) and Batu Kawi (brown stone).
